What Are Clear Aligners?
Clear aligners straighten teeth with a series of thin, transparent trays instead of brackets and a wire. Each tray is made very slightly different from the shape of your teeth today, so wearing it applies gentle pressure in the direction the teeth need to go. You change to the next one every week or two, and across the series the teeth walk into line a fraction of a millimetre at a time.
The engineering behind them is the same as braces — light force applied over months while the bone around each root remodels. What changes is the delivery. Because the tray is removable, nothing is off the menu and cleaning your teeth is unchanged. And because the whole sequence is planned in software before anything is made, you see a simulation of the finish before you agree to start, which is something fixed braces cannot offer.
The trade sits in that same removability. An aligner moves teeth only while it is in the mouth, and the treatment plan assumes twenty-two hours a day. That is not a target to aim at — it is the arithmetic the tray sequence is calculated on. Worn faithfully, aligners are excellent. Worn when convenient, they do not work slowly; they stall, and the plan has to be started over. It is worth being honest with yourself about that before choosing between these and braces.
A Full Correction or the Front Teeth Only

A Full Correction
Both arches treated, the back teeth included and the bite corrected along with the appearance. More trays and more months, and the option that actually changes how the mouth works rather than only how it looks from the front.

Front Teeth Only
A shorter course that lines up the teeth that show when you smile and leaves the back teeth and the bite as they are. Genuinely useful where the only complaint is a crooked front tooth — and genuinely the wrong answer where the bite is part of the problem. You should be told plainly which of the two you are.
Who Are Clear Aligners Suitable For?
Aligners handle a large share of straightening cases but not all of them, and suitability is decided by what the teeth need to do rather than by preference.
- Mild to moderate crowdingTeeth out of line where the correction is tipping and rotating rather than moving whole roots.
- Gaps between the teethSpacing to be closed — one of the movements aligners do particularly well.
- Teeth that moved after bracesRelapse years after the retainers stopped. Usually a short course rather than a full one.

- Work where braces are awkwardA job in front of people, where something removable and barely visible matters.
- A bite needing small correctionModest overbite or crossbite. Larger jaw discrepancies are a different conversation.
- Food trapping where teeth overlapOverlaps a brush cannot reach, where decay and gum inflammation keep starting.
Options
What Aligner Treatment Actually Involves
Most people arrive expecting clear trays and nothing else. That is about half of it, and the other half is worth knowing before you start rather than discovering at the fitting visit.
1The trays
A series made from one 3D scan, each very slightly different from the last. You change to the next set every one to two weeks, and each one moves the teeth a fraction of a millimetre.
2Attachments
Small tooth-coloured bumps bonded onto some teeth so the smooth tray has something to grip and push against. They stay on throughout and come off at the end. This is why aligners are nearly invisible rather than completely.
3Elastics
Where the bite needs correcting as well as the alignment, small rubber bands hook between the arches — the same principle as with braces, and just as dependent on actually wearing them.
4Creating space
Where teeth are crowded, a fraction of a millimetre is polished from between them to make room, which avoids extractions in many cases. It is painless and removes far less than it sounds.
How Does Aligner Treatment Work?
Seeing the result before you commit
A 3D scan of both arches, X-rays and photographs go into planning software, and the whole sequence of movements is worked out before anything is made. You are shown a simulation of where each tooth will finish and how long it should take. This is the moment to ask what is realistic — a simulation shows the plan, not a promise, and the honest conversation about which movements are predictable belongs here.

The routine, and the 22 hours
Attachments are bonded on, the first trays are fitted and checked, and you change to the next set on a schedule. They come out to eat and to drink anything but water, and go straight back in. Twenty-two hours a day is the number the whole plan is built on: the trays only move teeth while they are being worn, so time out of the mouth does not slow treatment down, it stops it.

Finishing properly
Teeth rarely finish exactly where the software predicted, so a second short series — refinement trays — is made from a fresh scan to close the gap between plan and result. Most cases need one round of these and it is normal rather than a setback. The attachments then come off, and retainers start the same day, because teeth begin drifting back within hours.

Recovery
Living With Aligners
Aligners ask less of your appearance and more of your discipline than braces do. These eight are what the difference between a good result and a stalled one comes down to.
- 1
Twenty-two hours, every day
Not a target — the arithmetic the plan is built on. Out for meals and back in straight after. Consistently under it and the teeth stop tracking with the trays, and the whole plan has to be re-scanned.
- 2
Water only while they are in
Tea, coffee and anything sugary stain the trays and pool against the enamel underneath. Take them out to drink, then put them back.
- 3
Tight and achy for two days
Each new set feels snug and the teeth are tender for a day or two, then it eases. Changing to a new set at bedtime means sleeping through the worst of it.
- 4
Clean the trays properly
Rinse and brush them with cool water and a soft brush. Not hot water, which warps them, and not toothpaste, which scratches and clouds the plastic.
- 5
Brush before they go back in
Sealing plaque and sugar against the teeth under a tight tray is a fast route to decay. Brushing after meals matters more here than it ever did before.
- 6
Speech takes a few days
A slight lisp for the first week is normal and it passes. Reading aloud to yourself speeds it up more than anything else.
- 7
Keep the previous set
If a tray is lost or cracked, going back to the last set holds the position until a replacement arrives. Throwing them away is how a lost tray becomes a lost month.
- 8
Retainers, then for good
The same rule as braces, and the same failure. Nights at first, then a few nights a week indefinitely — otherwise the teeth return to where they started and the treatment is bought twice.

Worth knowing
Supervised Aligners vs Mail-Order Kits
Aligners can now be bought online, with an impression kit posted to your home and trays sent back without you ever sitting in a chair. They are quicker to begin and ask nothing of your diary, and that is a real appeal. It is worth understanding exactly what is being left out.
What a clinic does before treatment is not paperwork. An examination and X-rays establish whether the teeth are actually healthy enough to be moved — decay has to be treated first, and moving teeth with untreated gum disease can loosen them permanently. Roots are checked for length and position. None of that is visible in an impression taken at your kitchen table, and none of it can be inferred from photographs.
The second half is what happens when the plan and the teeth disagree, which is common rather than rare. In a clinic a tooth that is not tracking gets an attachment adjusted, a tray reshaped, or the sequence re-planned at the next check. Remotely there is nobody watching closely enough to notice — the trays simply keep arriving. Most of the poor outcomes we see are not people who were unlucky, they are people who had nobody checking. If you do use a remote service, have a dentist examine you first.
What Happens at Your First Consultation
- 1ExaminationThe teeth, gums and bite, and whether anything needs treating before teeth are moved.
- 2RecordsX-rays and photographs, and a 3D scan of both arches rather than impressions.
- 3The simulationWhere each tooth would finish, and an honest word on which movements are predictable.
- 4PlanHow many trays, how long, and whether attachments or elastics are needed.
- 5AftercareThe 22-hour routine, and retainers afterwards — which is for longer than most expect.

Clear Aligners Near You in Gajularamaram
If you have been searching for clear aligners near you, the appointment that matters is the one that decides whether aligners are the right tool for your case at all. Some movements they do beautifully and some they do badly, and which you need is read off an X-ray and a scan rather than from how crooked the teeth look.
If you are considering a mail-order service instead, it is still worth an examination first. Decay and gum disease have to be dealt with before any teeth are moved, and neither is visible in an impression you take at home.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions about clear aligners
Still have a dental question?
Send us a message and our dental team will help.
Are clear aligners really invisible?
Nearly. The trays themselves are clear and most people will not notice them in conversation. What is visible at close range is the attachments — small tooth-coloured bumps bonded to some teeth so the tray has something to grip. They are far less obvious than brackets, but 'invisible' is a marketing word rather than an accurate one.
How long does treatment take?
Six to eighteen months for most cases, with simple front-tooth corrections at the short end and full corrections with bite changes at the long end. The plan gives a predicted number of trays at the start. Wearing them less than the full time does not stretch that number — it stops the teeth tracking and usually means starting the sequence again.
Do aligners hurt?
There is pressure and tenderness for a day or two with each new set, strongest at the beginning of treatment and milder as it goes on. Most people describe it as tight rather than painful. Changing to a new set at bedtime means sleeping through the worst of it.
Can I take them out for a wedding or a meeting?
Yes, and that flexibility is the main advantage. An hour or two occasionally will not undo anything. What causes trouble is habitual removal — the twenty-two hours is what the whole plan is calculated on, and regularly falling short is the commonest reason aligner treatment fails.
Will aligners work for my case?
They handle crowding, spacing, rotations and mild bite problems very well. They are less predictable where a whole root has to be moved through bone, where a tooth is severely rotated, or where the jaws themselves sit differently. An honest assessment will tell you if braces would do your case better — and sometimes the answer is that they would.
What happens if I lose a tray?
Go back to the previous set immediately — that is why you keep them — and call. Depending on where you are in the sequence you may move on to the next set early or have the lost one remade. The thing not to do is leave the trays out while you wait, because the teeth start drifting within a day.
